"For me, success is when a client leaves a meeting lighter than they came in. If they leave saying, “I get it now, and I know what to do,” that’s the ultimate validation."
Paul Davies- Founder, 54 Law
As someone deeply invested in helping businesses achieve calm, clarity, and streamlined operations through my business (A Burden Shared), I'm thrilled to sit down with Paul Davies from 54 Law. His journey resonates strongly with my mission: transforming & demystifying complex, often overwhelming processes into clear, manageable paths. Paul has a real talent for turning what often feels overwhelming and intimidating into something clear, manageable, and empowering. Together, we’ll explore how he’s reshaping the way business owners experience legal support, and how he’s helping lift the weight of complexity from their shoulders.
I saw too many clients, especially small business owners, feeling lost in legal processes. The tipping point was gradual, but I realised how often the process is about getting the job done, billing the client and moving on and that they don’t get the level of support that they really need to understand their lease, and they felt too intimidated to ask questions or that it would cost them too much if they did. It struck me that law had become about billable hours and ego, not about clarity and empowerment.
I wanted to create a place where clients felt in control of their own legal journey, with plain-English advice and transparent pricing. For me, it was about building something human, a law firm where you walk in with questions and walk out with a plan.
The emotional challenge was stepping away from the safety net, the resources, the brand recognition, the built-in support. When you run your own practice, there’s no committee to back you up; the decisions are yours alone. That can feel daunting at first.
But the freedom was extraordinary. I could design client processes that worked, without layers of approval. I could make a decision at 9am and put it into action by 10. I could remove the unnecessary complexity and focus on what genuinely serves clients. That agility is priceless.
A really good example of this was a chef who came to me looking to enter into their first lease as owner of a new restaurant. They were overwhelmed, didn’t understand the clauses, and were worried about signing something that could sink their business. (Very understandable fears.)
Using The Lease Report, I broke everything down into plain English, flagged the risks, and prepared clear negotiation points. The legal win was important but what stayed with me was when they said, “thank you for making the process so simple”.
I’d seen too many businesses hesitate to get legal help because they were scared of an open-ended bill. Fixed pricing takes away that anxiety clients know exactly what they’ll pay before we start.
For me, it’s about fairness and trust. Law should be a clear, accessible service that supports you without the financial fear factor. All cases have quirks, the client shouldn’t worry about that meaning extra charges because of “hidden issues”.
There are quite a few and I’ve written articles on many of them: repair obligations, service charges, and qualified break clauses can all carry serious risks. But if I had to pick one overarching issue, it’s the hidden costs and expenses that catch people out.
Things like Stamp Duty Land Tax, professional fees, and unexpected service charge demands can add up to far more than people budget for. I’ve seen clients agree terms thinking they’ve covered the main costs, only to face a significant extra financial burden that could have been spotted and planned for at the outset.
"It's about giving clients confidence, not just contracts."

For me, success is when a client leaves a meeting lighter than they came in. If they leave saying, “I get it now, and I know what to do,” that’s the ultimate validation. It’s about giving people clarity and confidence.
Lawyers are trained for perfection, but business needs momentum. I’ve learned that 80% done and delivered is often better than 100% perfect but too late. It’s about empowering a client to know when it’s okay to be exacting, and when to move forward to keep things alive and moving.
I wouldn’t point to any single mentor. My guidance has come from the breadth and depth of experience I’ve built over the years, and from the variety of clients I’ve had the privilege to work with. Every client – from first-time tenants to seasoned property investors – has taught me something new about problem-solving, resilience, and communication.
That constant exposure to different industries, personalities, and challenges has been my greatest teacher. It’s shaped the way I approach legal work and business alike.
I want 54 Law to be the go-to name for commercial property clarity, a place where business owners come not just for legal documents, but for understanding.
The legacy I want is simple: to prove that law can be accessible, transparent, and human, without losing expertise. I want to leave behind a model that others in the industry feel inspired to adopt.
You’ll never feel completely ready and that’s okay. Don’t wait for the perfect moment, because it doesn’t exist. Instead, get crystal clear on your ‘why’ and keep it in front of you when the doubts creep in.
I like the quote: “Courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s taking the leap while the fear is still there”. And when you see the impact you can have on clients, that leap will feel like the best decision you ever made.
Paul, thank you so much for this thoughtful and enlightening conversation, I came away feeling even more inspired to drive my own business forward. What really stands out is your commitment to bringing clarity and confidence back to business owners in an area that so often feels daunting.
It’s clear that 54 Law isn’t just about legal expertise – it’s about building trust, breaking down barriers, and giving people the freedom to focus on their businesses without that constant legal worry in the background. I’ve loved hearing how Paul & 54 Law are driving a more transparent and supportive way of working in law, and I know many will find your perspective both refreshing and reassuring.
